YA Book Covers

It’s no surprise that a vast majority of YA book covers consist of a pretty girl in a pretty dress. Some readers are tired of this trend, but yet, the covers continue.

Clockwork Princess (Infernal Devices)

ENTWINED
WITHER

Mixed in with all the pretty girls, are beautiful artistic covers.
Bitterblue (Graceling)

Shadow and Bone (Grisha Trilogy)

Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls)

I went to school for graphic design and the one thing I was in love with was this…

The Gutenberg Bible has beautiful ornate detail. I’d really like to see this type of craftsmanship return in books.

Now, as a reader which do you prefer? And do you think the pretty girl trend will fade?

  1. Lol, wow…I never even realized this but you are so right. There are loads of YA books with females, especially moping or lost looking ones. They're always so emotional.

–I do like seeing characters, not necessarily females, on the front cover simply because it usually serves as a glimpse of the overall premise of the novel…but artistic or intrinsic designs can have equal impact as well. Something about a person on the cover always gets me though…like the Harry Potter covers. Love them.

  2. Hmm I've never noticed there are a lot of girls in dresses in YA books. I don't really like books with characters on the cover. I like simple, designs or objects. But if there is a character on the cover, I don't like seeing their face.
