Today’s topic: May I tell you something about someone else?

Today, I’d like to talk about one of the best fantasy characters ever created: Drizzt Do’Urden.

Never heard of him? Well, that’s okay. There’s a first time for everything.

Drizzt is a fictional character set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of Dungeons and dragons. Created by the awesome, R.A Salvatore. He first appears in R.A’s book THE CRYSTAL SHARD which is part of the ICEWIND DALE TRILOGY. Drizzt was a secondary character, but the fans loved him.

Drizzt defied who he was–drow, part of the dark elf race living beneath the surface in the Underdark. They are a cruel and evil species who strive for hate, violence, and ultimate power, whatever the cost. Drizzt favors friendship and peace, and leaves the feral city of Menzoberranzan to embark to the surface where his race are hated and feared.

He fights for those he loves and will stop at nothing to protect them while fighting his own dark nature.

One thing I love about Drizzt is his ferocious loyalty and his superior fighting techniques. I’m pretty convinced he can kill anything.

In some of the R.A novels, Drizzt will have a few passages, in his own words. Thoughts on the journey and life. I love these little insights. I skimmed through some of the books to find you a few treasures.

“Spirit. It cannot be broken and it cannot be stolen away. A victim in the throes of despair might feel otherwise, and certainly the victim’s “master” would like to believe it so. But in truth, the spirit remains, sometimes buried but never fully removed.” —-Drizzt Do’Urden, EXILE

“Virtue is the celebration of life and love, the acceptance of others and the desire to grow toward goodness, toward a better place. It is the absence of pride and envy, the willingness to share our joys and to bask in the accomplishment of others. It is above justification because it is what truly lies in each and every heart. If a person does an evil act, then let him weave his mask, but it will not hide the truth, the absolute, from what is naked within his own heart.” —Drizzt Do’Urden, PASSAGE TO DAWN

“What is important is the assurance that my life will continue to hold adventure, purpose, and goals. That is the secret, I believe. To continually reach higher is to live; to always strive to be a better person or to make the world around you a better place or to enrich your life or the lives of those you love is the secret to that most elusive of goals: a sense of accomplishment.

For some, that can be achieved by creating order and security or a sense of home. For some, including many dwarves, it can be achieved by the accumulation of wealth or the crafting of a magnificent item.

For me, I’ll use my scimitars.” —Drizzt Do’Urden, THE THOUSAND ORCS.
